2020 Subaru Legacy Offers Enhanced Features, Safety Rating & Fuel Economy

With new tech and reinstated Turbo features, the redesigned 2020 Subaru Legacy is a darling for anyone looking for a top sedan. From infotainment to safety, to fuel economy, the redesign has already sent tongues wagging with significant improvements.

Buyers can choose from the Sport, Premium, Touring XT, Limited and Limited XT trims. The new XT ushers the turbocharged engine back to Subaru. In-car Wi-Fi connectivity, sound-insulated glass and rear automatic emergency braking highlight the changes in Subaru's 7th generation midsize sedan. Subaru Ascent's platform inspired most of these top features.

Take a look at the impressive features of the redesign.

What's New for 2020?

New tech implementation

Wi-Fi connectivity stands out on the 2020's tech implementation. The LTE communications-powered smooth internet provides excellent entertainment for passengers. The sound-insulating glass offers a quiet interior while the facial recognition software detects any distractions from the driver.

Interiors

The 11.6" infotainment, offered in all trims except the base trim, takes Subaru's entertainment offerings to a whole new level. The new tablet-style screen allows one to control vehicle settings, climate and entertainment. The screen even lets you run two functions simultaneously while in split-screen mode.

The automaker has also introduced TomTom's navigation system standard for the Touring model. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility offer great alternatives for drivers seeking direction.

For premium sound, the new sedan comes with high-efficiency speakers from GreenEdge. The speakers complement the compressed audio restoration tech and Kardon's audio system. The soft-touch material on the door panels and dashboard marks another upgrade to the sedan's interior.

Comfort

Buyers can now adjust the front seats in 10 different ways for maximum comfort. If you buy the Touring or Limited trim, you can also change the cushion length on the driver's seat. Driving in the cold? Enjoy shoulder-high warmth from the heated front and rear seats. On the Touring model, buyers will enjoy a heated steering wheel along with ventilated front seats.

For top models, drivers get extendable thigh cushions on the front seats with bolsters that increase comfort. Are you looking to make yourself feel at home? Enjoy your favorite music with the optional infotainment touch screen – its iPad size makes it easier to view your control options. The suspension system also skews more towards comfort, leaving out the sporty edge.

Rear-seat riders get up to 40" of legroom in the spacious cabin that should comfortably accommodate five occupants.

Performance

The new Legacy comes with an optional turbocharged engine that offers 260 horsepower (hp) for top performance. The sound-insulated windshield comes standard on all trims, allowing drivers to enjoy quieter rides with a decrease in road noise. The Limited XT and Touring XT also come with sound-insulated front windows to help eliminate engine noise. Subaru used a stiffer body for the 2020 Legacy model that also helps with noise reduction, along with smoother handling capabilities.

Exterior

The 2020 Legacy exterior resembles the 2019 model with most of the improvements coming under the hood and in the interior. New to the 2020 model is a sleeker front and rear-end accentuated by thinner-looking headlights and taillights.

Safety Rating

New to the Legacy's Eyesight safety system, which already included automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, is a self-steering lane-keep system. This feature is standard on all Legacy trims and helps keep your vehicle in its lane and safely on its path. You also have the ability to upgrade your safety features on most Legacys with blind-spot monitors and rear automatic emergency braking.

Subaru has also coupled security to advanced driver-assist tech in the new sedan called DriverFocus. This new technology uses facial recognition to detect when a driver is distracted or fatigued. A warning is sent that will alert the driver and passengers when distractions or drowsiness is noticed. The new driver facial-recognition feature comes standard on the Limited XT and Touring XT models and is optional on the Legacy Limited.

To ace tight-spot parking, drivers can leverage the front view monitor system. This is a first for the Legacy and gives a 180-degree view of road conditions reducing the risks of accidents. The responsive headlamps on the limited and touring models help ease maneuvering at night.

The 2020 Legacy also comes with eight standard airbags to keep occupants safe in case of an accident. These airbags supplement the improved crash protection system.

Fuel Economy

Even with a big body style, one will be surprised at the fuel efficiency in the new sedan. With the 182-hp engine, buyers can expect an impressive fuel economy from the latest Subaru with an estimated 32 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg for the city (30 mpg combined).

For the standard engine, Subaru estimated a 35/27 mpg highway/city fuel economy (27mpg combined). The sedan's 27 mpg city rating from EPA is an improvement from last year's 23 mpg.

The optional 2.4-liter turbo-4 is new to the 2020 Legacy and is rated as 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and combined 27 mpg. This new engine is more fuel-efficient than last year’s 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the six-cylinder.

Performance and standard features

Coming standard on all the 2020 Subaru Legacy is all-wheel-drive, which boasts a 182-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. With 277 lb-ft of torque, the new engine is an upgrade from the 247 lb-ft from the previous model's engine.

You can always switch to the optional 2.4-liter engine for a turbo experience - the first in the Legacy line since 2012. Accelerate your sedan confidently with the much-quieter turbo engine in the Touring and Limited XT trims. The turbo-engine runs past 3,000 rpm with nothing short of triple-digit speeds.

The 260-hp turbocharged engine requires 6.1 seconds to accelerate 0-60 mph, according to the automaker. With the standard 2.5-liter BOXER, Subaru estimates a 0-60mph acceleration of 8.4 seconds - the throttle makes it feel faster.

Subaru has also introduced an all-new suspension that offers dynamic performance. Both the front and back suspensions come with a new hollow stabilizer bar that makes them more responsive. The V-rated all-season tires provide enough grip to complement these suspensions.
